Witnessed tons of "men" defending a predatory act and getting offended by women merely calling these acts out.
Prior to Partition, both my grandparents were Pakistani Hindus. Based on what they have been able to recall, they were approximately 15–16 years old at the time of Partition, so their memories are understandably faded after all these years.
My grandmother is originally from Multan / muzzafargarh she specifically recalls the name "Tehsil Alipur." Her father was a local zamindar and, by her account, a fairly prominent and wealthy man. She remembers their home as a large nine-storey building situated within a gated, society type locality. When the news and panic of Partition spread, along with the religous violence, the family left almost everything behind. Before departing, her father handed over the property to a Muslim family they knew. The only update they ever received after arriving in India was that this family had demolished the upper four floors and was living in the remaining structure. My grandfather was from Dera Gazi Khan; he came from a more modest background and has since passed away, so details about his side are limited.
My grandmother is now approximately 95 years old, and the details she retains are: a gated residential area in Tehsil Alipur, a nine-storey building that belonged to her family, and her father's identity as a local zamindar and businessman.
I would like to ask is there any possible way to trace information about this land today? For instance:
- Searching old government or land revenue records (from either side of the border)
- Reaching out to local archives or municipal offices in Multan/Tehsil Alipur
- Using Google Earth or satellite imagery to identify the area
- Any community-based resources or Partition documentation projects
I am based in India, so I am also open to suggestions about what can be realistically pursued from here. Any guidance, personal experience, or leads would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
