I am seeking representation for my completed 76,000 word Young Adult Dystopian Romance novel, EQUIPOISE.
The Government decides mental illness is a liability society can no longer afford. Split in two, the population knows two categories: ‘Stablis, who are allowed to live freely, and ‘Desringier’ who are exiled beyond the Wall, where survival is uncertain and no one truly knows what it’s like, other than you “thrive with the like of mind’”. Millie’s first time teaching a class with students to be exiled, and then a chance encounter with her old best friend (and first love), Elijah, forces her to question everything she has been told about the world she lives in. She needs to decide if she is brave enough to fight the voice in her head, rebel and betray her boyfriend, Jax. Cam has been exiled, separated from the girl he loves – Stella – the light to his darkness. He must adapt, or die. They are his choices. When he is offered the chance to protect Stella in exchange for information on his newfound family, Cameron is faced with a decision where there is no guarantee of the outcome for him, Stella, or anyone else on either side of the Wall.
Told through the perspective of two mentally ill people, Equipoise is written through the lens of an adult, and a teenager. Appealing to fans of ‘An Ocean Apart’ by Jill Tew, for the love triangle involving a best friend, and to those drawn to the idea of overcoming an oppressive government like in Neil Shusterman’s ‘All Better Now’, 16-year-olds and above will enjoy the two separate romantic relationships and the themes of mental health, found family and hope in Equipoise.
As a mum of two and high school English teacher in Australia with bipolar II disorder, I have spent four years working on Equipoise (Book 1 of 2). I am ready for my words to be a light for those lost in the darkness of their mind.
