send your harsh light
and burn me clean

Fool that I am,
let your truth
take my head from me.

Fool that I’ve been,
I’ve learned to expect
nothing but cruelty
and still I kneel
cursing you
for the heart you gave me

I beg for death
while wasting your gift,
secretly extinguishing the flame
you put in my heart
where no one sees

Cruel God,
be kind this once

lay this restless heart to sleep,
place your fire
in another chest
one that knows what to do with it.

Rise me to your feet,
beneath your light,
not worthy of it
only honest at last.

I am so tired
of the lies I tell myself.
