I am a confused baby this year when it came to taxes...
Background: I successfully filed my federal taxes by the deadline and was slated to receive a decent refund. But state taxes were a whole different story: I moved states in 2025 to go to school but did NOT become a permanent resident in my new location.
At the time of filing, I mistakenly thought I had to file as a part-time resident for both states and therefore couldn't decipher the steps and tax code with the amount of time I left for myself before the deadline... (I think I need to file in one state as a resident but get a tax credit for the income tax I will pay in the 2nd state?)
I tried filing just my state taxes online but I couldn't find an e-filing service that would allow me to file state taxes WITHOUT filing federally, which I had already completed which is why I filed a federal extension (even after filing a return) so I could file two state extensions. I also made a payment to one state because I knew I would owe something.
My questions are:
What do I do now? I received my refund from the fed gov which is great! But will they see my extension and take back the money? Or am I responsible for correcting the extension that I don't need? Can I 'cancel' or 'undo' the federal extension? What do I need to do?
For the state taxes, is there an e-filing service that will allow me to ONLY file state taxes? And does anyone have any advice on filing correctly when I made income in two different states but was only a resident in one state? Am I right in thinking I need to file in one state as a resident but get a tax credit for the income tax I will pay in the 2nd state?
