Hey everyone,

I’m 40, a dad to two young boys, and I’ve decided to tackle my first half-Ironman. I originally signed up for IM 70.3 Eagleman (June 14), but I'm having serious second thoughts and am heavily leaning toward deferring to IM 70.3 Maine (July 26).

I’d love the community's input, as I'm dealing with two major hurdles right now:

1. Severe Sun/UV Sensitivity I have a medical-level sensitivity to the sun. I get UVA/UVB sunburns and rashes incredibly fast. I've heard Eagleman is essentially an exposed frying pan with zero shade. Maine is obviously cooler, but I know the late-July UV index is still a factor regardless of the temperature.

2. My Current Training Status (A reality check)

  • Run: I’ve done a few half marathons. My HR tends to spike into Zone 4, so I’m currently putting in the work to build my Zone 2 base.
  • Swim: I am brand new to swimming. I'm putting in the hours and trying my best to get race-ready, but it's a steep learning curve.
  • Bike: This is the kicker. I do indoor training on a Wahoo Smart Trainer, but I have never actually ridden my bike outside yet.

Given my UV issues and the fact that my outdoor bike handling skills are currently nonexistent, what does the community recommend?

  • Am I making the right call by deferring to Maine for cooler weather and an extra 6 weeks to learn to ride outside and swim in open water?
  • For my fellow sun-sensitive triathletes: how do you survive a 70.3? Do you wear full long-sleeve UPF tri-suits? Any specific sunscreen or gear recommendations?

Thanks in advance for the reality checks and the advice!
