I’ll start by saying I’m a sophomore at a small charter school (my grade is only about 50 people).

Me and my friends started doing this dumb noise as an inside joke. Yeah, I know it sounds corny—it’s basically just a short grunt. I guess someone could interpret it as a moan, but to us it’s not that at all. It’s just a random noise we started doing, especially when it’s dead silent in class and someone wants to be funny.

Since our grade is so small, pretty much everyone knows about it. At this point, everyone understands it’s just a joke and not meant to be anything weird. Even one of the teachers has done it before because he thought it was funny.

There’s also this teacher (I’ll call her Mrs. C) who we thought was pretty chill. We joke with her sometimes—like when we bring cake in for birthdays, she’ll jokingly ask for a slice. Just normal light stuff like that.

One of my friends (I’ll call him K) would sometimes make the noise when she walked by at lunch. It wasn’t targeted in a serious way—it was just part of the joke that everyone was in on. This went on for a couple months.

Then one day everything blew up.

Mrs. C was making an announcement in the cafeteria, and it was completely silent except for her. One of my friends (J) made the noise loudly. She immediately stopped and yelled at him to go to the office (Mr. S, who handles discipline).

J left, and later Mr. S also called in another friend (M). The thing is, M is the type of kid who never gets in trouble and gets really good grades—and he barely even participated in the joke.

They were both stuck in the office for the rest of the day. Apparently, Mrs. C told Mr. S that we were sexually harassing her, and that she had already mentioned this concern before.

This is where it gets crazy to me.

The entire grade knows this noise is just a dumb inside joke and not sexual at all. If the school had just asked literally any teacher or student, they could’ve confirmed that.

Later that same day during study hall, they also pulled in K. All three of them ended up getting “major demerits,” which is basically 1/5 of an expulsion—so it’s a pretty big deal.

The official reason they gave was “disruptive behavior,” because they couldn’t actually prove the harassment claim. But it honestly feels like the school just wanted to punish something because they don’t like letting people leave the office without consequences (this has happened before).

The next day, I went to school expecting I might get called in too. I was planning to tell my parents first because I didn’t want them getting a call saying I was sexually harassing a teacher without context—but I didn’t get the chance.

Near the end of first period, I did get called—but not to the office. It was my dad.

M’s mom had warned my parents about what was going on because the school hadn’t even bothered to inform them before talking to her son. So my dad decided to just pull me out of school for the day (it’s Friday anyway, and I don’t have school Monday).

So yeah, that’s where I’m at right now.

also this is rephrased by ai the original was really bad.
