Would it be unreasonable to leave a somewhat ok job for a role with more structure, supervision, and training early in my career?
I’m in my first entry-level role as a legal associate. The pay is good, I have 25 days paid leave, only in office attendance. and my boss and general manager are genuinely kind and supportive people. My boss is great, and the GM regularly checks in on how I’m doing.
That said, I’m struggling with the structure of the role and the work environment. Since this is my first legal job, I expected more supervision and training, especially for heavier legal work. Instead, I’m often expected to handle matters and calls independently, without a direct manager closely reviewing my work or teaching me as I go.
Keep in mind, I dont work in a law firm but rather an organization.
There is a legal consultant who helps when he can, but he isn’t my supervisor and mentoring me isn’t really his role. I’ve raised the need for more experienced legal guidance twice, but not much has changed.
The work environment also feels difficult at times, with unclear ownership of tasks and people often passing responsibility around, which makes things more stressful as a junior employee.
I feel conflicted because the people in management are genuinely good, but I also feel like I’m struggling to build a proper legal foundation and keep taking one step forward, two steps back.
Would it be unreasonable to leave a “good” job for a role with more structure, supervision, and training early in my career?
