Is Carpet Padding Necessary?

My bedroom floor is newly installed red oak. I have a wool 11 x 14 area rug that I want to put under the bed to protect the floor. The bed is very heavy so it shouldn't be shifting on the floor. Is carpet padding really needed? Previously the bed was directly on an old pergo floor and you could see marks on the floor where the bed sat.

My dining room table got chipped during a recent move. Is there a simple way to mask the damage? I don't know anything about wood work. The solution doesn't need to be perfect. Thx
