Maybe some of you have already seen my previous post, but yes, I’ve finally decided on Colombia! Now the question is about flights, and therefore the itinerary. My main question is: is it worth flying into Cartagena to explore the coast, or is it not really worth it?
I had thought of an itinerary like this (I should point out that it seems very set in stone, but that’s not the case at all—it’s just to get an idea of the places that interest me and, above all, where to land):
Cartagena
Santa Marta
Minca
Sierra Nevada de santa marta
Medellin (plane)
Jardin
Salento
Los Nevados national park
Bogota (transition)
San Augustin (plane x 2)
Bogota
My problem with this itinerary is that I’m flying too much for my liking, and the bus ride seems really long. So I was thinking of cutting out either San Agustín or the Caribbean coast. Or even both and going with a different itinerary, haha. Knowing there are so many other places in this country that appeal to me, it’s so hard to choose! The Caribbean coast looks really pretty, with the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Tayrona National Park, and Minca, but I also imagine it’s very (too?) touristy, especially in the summer (I’m traveling from mid-July to mid-August). Anyway, overall, if you have any recommendations on places that are definitely worth visiting or ones to skip, I’m all ears!
Since my travel preferences are a mix of local, authentic experiences and meeting other travelers, I try to strike a balance between less touristy, more local spots and places that are still fairly touristy—without losing their charm!
Also, a quick question about Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta: I know the iconic trek to do is the one to Ciudad Perdida, but I’m afraid I’ll be disappointed because it’s so touristy (and because a good trek is really a highlight of my trip—I love it). Do you have any recommendations for treks organized by a local agency that are more authentic (and sporty)?
