hi everyone! I’m new to reddit but need advice. I just moved into an apartment building, everything has been going great except one thing, my neighbor.
I moved into the apartment in mid february and the contract seems like the typical apartment contract. for example, no pets, no excessive noise after 10pm, no drilling holes in the walls, no drugs, etc. And in the contract it specifically says no smoking/ vaping of any kind (cigarette, marijuana, or any other substances) inside any building or shared space. Breach of any of these things can result in getting evicted.
my lovely neighbor moved in around mid March. and is an avid cigarette smoker. he smokes in his apartment/ office which is below my apartment. the smoke smell travels into my bedroom, and other living spaces and makes my clothing, bedding and furniture smell like cigarettes.
my husband has kindly asked him to stop multiple times and has spoken with the managers of the complex on number occasions (with a paper trail).
one time my husband went up to my neighbor and asked if he was smoking because we could smell it and he held a cigarette behind his head and said “no I don’t know that you’re talking about.“ and there were multiple cigarette butts on the floor.
the complex manages say they cannot do anything because they need proof, but obviously they can’t and I can’t install cameras to catch him in the act.
so Reddit do you have any advice on how to stop the smell from coming into my apartment, getting the smell out of my apartment when my neighbor does smoke, or any other advice in general??
