Stuck in a dilemma between two jobs, what should I choose?
I'm desperately looking to hear some advice/opinions on what you guys would do in my situation.
To preface, you have to understand that I am a HUGE sports fan and the World Cup is my favorite international tournament of any sport. Like I've dreamed of volunteering for the tournament, let alone getting to work it, is such a crazy plot line for me.
SO with that in mind, here's the situation:
- I originally had plans to volunteer some shifts at the World Cup, but unfortunately, I missed my deadline to accept the role offer, so I decided to look for some other roles to get involved with the World Cup.
- I got an offer back in mid-April to work a contract role during the FIFA World Cup to help support brand activations with a major sports agency and their client
- The role only lasts from June 1 to July 19 (tournament time), and the pay is small, but it's doable. The company will provide accommodation and travel during the contract role. Since I live in NYC, I was thinking I could sublet my apt to make up for some of my rent so that I could keep the pay as just a living stipend.
- The role is to help support the brand activations at the stadiums and the Fan Festival across the Northeastern market, which is super cool. I've done a bunch of brand activations before and let you tell me that I am such a hype man. Like I am definitely having a lot of fun doing these events! So I know that I would kill it and that it'll be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me to connect with fans from all over the world who share the same love of soccer as me.
- After July, I'm done. I've already quit my 9-5 in the media industry, so I would be without income or insurance, living in NYC. (I love New York and I definitely do not want to move out, I have saved enough to comfortably live in the city for around 6 months without pay but also I don't want to drown out my savings you know?)
- I could definitely hustle and grind and network the shit out of this experience, but the risk is certainly there..
- Since I've been trying to make a pivot into the sports industry from media (which is my current job), I have been applying to jobs very casually since February.
- I recently got an offer for a FULL-TIME position this week at an up-and-coming sports betting company working in performance analytics. It's not my dream job or dream company, but it's something that lines up great for my career trajectory.
- The full-time offer has better pay and health insurance, but the problem is that they want me to start working on June 1. I have already asked them to delay the start date, but they originally wanted me to start on May 18th, and June 1st was their negotiation.
- If I take the full-time offer, I do not believe I would be able to complete the World Cup job, as that requires on-site presence on event days (which I haven't gotten the schedule for yet). On the other hand, the FT job is hybrid.
- If I take the FT job, then I lose the opportunity to work an event that I have dreamed of, but should I be choosing stability over this momentous experience of pure bliss? But the job market is so bad right now too, so there is no guarantee I'd be able to get a new job offer by July. Sigh*
I would love to hear your thoughts! Let me know what you would choose, or if you guys think that it'll be possible for me to do both.
