TL;DR: After an HR complaint, I was told for months I’d be moved into a new role with full separation from my supervisor. The final decision reversed that and keeps us working closely together. What options do I have?
I’m in the U.S, in NYS at a university library. About a year ago, I filed an HR complaint against my supervisor after a serious 1:1 incident and ongoing workplace issues. During the process, there were also concerns about how my performance was being documented.
After escalation, my reporting line was changed.
Following that, HR and leadership worked on a “path forward.” Over ~2 months, I was repeatedly told I would move into a manager-level role, have fully separate responsibilities from this supervisor, have independent authority over my area. As recently as two weeks ago, I was told this plan was moving forward.
However, the final role I received has no title/status change, expands responsibilities without added authority, and still requires close collaboration with this supervisor
I’ve been invited to give feedback, but was told the structure was finalized for “strategic reasons.”
- Is it common for HR/leadership to communicate a role change this clearly and then not follow through?
- Do I have any realistic leverage to push back at this stage?
- Would pursuing an accommodation to limit interaction with this person be reasonable?
- When does it make sense to consult external guidance vs. continuing internally?
Any insight is appreciated.
