I’m going to be flying out of Istanbul early June to get back to the states and would love to spend a few days or a week exploring Turkey before I go, but I’m a little nervous about the sentiment toward Americans right now. I’m ashamed to be associated with the things my country had done and have never once supported the orange tyrant, but I also understand that I can’t walk around with a sign or hand out cards to every person I interact with letting them know that I’m not one of “those” Americans.
They have every right to hate us and I completely understand not wanting any American tourism at all. At the same time, this is a rare opportunity and their culture is SO beautiful. I’d love to explore it, but I’m a solo female traveler and want to put my safety above all else.
To clarify, I’m not assuming people from Turkey are violent or hateful in any way. I would like to think Turks understand more than most that a government actions doesn’t reflect the opinions of all its citizens. Just hoping to gather insight rather than speculating on my own.
