Google is quietly testing AI Mode on desktop this could completely change search

Looks like Google is pushing AI search even further.

They’re now testing AI Mode directly on desktop search, not just mobile or Labs. This isn’t just another feature it’s basically a shift from “search engine” → “answer engine.”

From what I understand:

  • AI Mode goes beyond AI Overviews (which are just summaries)
  • It actually breaks your query into subtopics and generates a full response
  • You can ask follow-ups like a chatbot, inside search itself
  • It’s powered by Gemini and uses multiple sources behind the scenes

So instead of clicking 5–6 links… you might not click anything at all.

For SEOs and content creators, this feels like a big moment:

  • Less visibility for traditional blue links
  • More competition to be cited inside AI answers
  • Search becoming more conversational and intent-heavy

At the same time, there are still concerns around accuracy and traffic loss from AI answers replacing clicks.

March 2026 Core Update Finished — Anyone else seeing crazy volatility?

Google just wrapped up the March 2026 Core Update (rolled out from March 27 → April 8).

Been tracking a few SaaS + AI tool sites, and honestly… the volatility has been pretty wild.

Some quick observations from my side:

  • A few low-authority sites jumped unexpectedly
  • Some well-structured content sites dropped (even with solid backlinks)
  • Pages with strong topical clusters seem to be holding or gaining
  • Thin “AI-generated only” content is getting hit (not surprising)

What’s interesting is that this feels less about backlinks and more about:
Content depth
Intent match
Overall site authority (not just DR)

I’m starting to think Google is getting way better at evaluating actual usefulness vs surface-level optimization.

What I’m doing next:

  • Auditing pages that lost rankings (especially page 2 → page 5 drops)
  • Improving internal linking between related topics
  • Updating content instead of publishing more
  • Doubling down on topical authority vs chasing keywords

Curious to hear from others:
Did you see traffic go up or down?
Any specific patterns you’re noticing?
Which niches got hit the most?
