Hi everyone,

I’m looking to see if anyone has had a similar experience while camping or van-living in the Lake District, specifically in the Portinscale / Derwentwater area near the River Derwent.

I am a paranormal sceptic, but this past Saturday night, we were parked up and experienced something I can’t explain. Around midnight, we heard extremely loud, heavy footsteps approaching the van. The best way I can describe the sound is like someone wearing heavy moon boots or thick, stiff hiking boots.
It sounded bipedal (two-legged), but it didn’t feel "human." The strange part was the volume and the timing:
We didn't hear them coming from a distance. They only became noticeable about 4 steps away.
The steps got incredibly loud right next to the van.
Then... nothing. The footsteps stopped right outside our door and just disappeared.

We didn’t hear anyone walk away, no brush moving, and no car doors. It was as if whatever it was just ceased to exist the moment it reached us.
I’ve since looked into local folklore and heard about "Dobies" or "Boggles" in the area, but I wanted to know if any other campers or van-dwellers have heard these specific "heavy boot" sounds around Derwentwater. It was unnerving how physical it sounded, only to vanish into thin air.
Has anyone else encountered this "disappearing walker" or heard something similar in this part of Cumbria?
