i recently got my device and have used both stock firmware and Crosspoint. when searching online I found pretty much only Crosspoint positives and no one describing any negatives so I wanted to compile them. please feel free to add any issues you’ve had also and share more information of how I could fix issues I’ve had with Crosspoint.
- rendering of book covers
- they look washed out & faded on crosspoint but have so much more detail on stock
- they take ages to load, when you go back to the home screen after opening a new book
- this might be that not be that important but for me i like the cover to look nice
- i also noticed residual text from browsing the device on the cover when the device sleeps, which did not happen at all with stock
- opening of new epubs
- I have found every time I open a new EPUB it takes 10+ seconds of the device being unresponsive for it to open
- not sure if this is abnormal or not
- this never happened w/ stock, only a few seconds
- I have found every time I open a new EPUB it takes 10+ seconds of the device being unresponsive for it to open
- unresolved spacing issues in EPUBs
- I changed to cross point thinking it would eliminate spacing issues but many of the same excess spacing problems are there even though the txt looks nicer overall than in stock firmware
- xtc/ manga files
- it seems that in an xtc file, you cannot access the menu that is needed to edit any settings in a book like going to a particular page no. or to enable autoflip feature??
- i had this issue specifically with manga but not sure if it applies to non-image xtcs
- autoflip feature
- this is better in stock firmware as you can specify an exact number of seconds
- xteink app
- when using Crosspoint, you do not have access to app
- cool app features you miss out on
- easy adding of photos to use as wallpapers directly from photo library
- send books w/o scanning any qr or using any third party website (xtcloud thing)
- when you send books you can choose an option that will convert to xtc all in one step
- a pitfall of this is that its only available for iOS officially at the time of this post i think
- update: a kind commenter shared this is on android too actually
- wallpapers
- on stock firmware, you can put any image on your sd card and view it on the device to see if you’ll like it as a wallpaper etc
- the images on my sd card are not even showing up on crosspoint
- to see any image as your wallpaper in stock, you can just select it & press an option that says set images as wallpaper, something like that
- I think with crosspoint you've got to set a file as sleep.bmp or something like that
- on stock firmware, you can put any image on your sd card and view it on the device to see if you’ll like it as a wallpaper etc
- text adjustment
- it seems you have to go to the settings page if you want to change anything about the font etc
- in stock you can change the text size within a book
- you can also choose a specific font for that book which i can’t find a way to do in crosspoint
here are the only benefits i’ve found switching:
- the system font of crosspoint looks much better/natural than the stock one but the stock is still good enough to enjoy reading i think
- the homepage looks less cluttered
- battery percentage
- for me, I see no value in this as one only need to charge like monthly as opposed to a phone so chances of dying on me are slim
- also stock gives you a notification saying the battery is low you need to charge so I think that’s sufficient
- better adjustability of text overall
Everyone who gets this device should test both I think and find what works best for them instead of thinking crosspoint is definitely better for sure!
