Eco to mth
I’m a fresher at IIT Kanpur currently in Economics, and I’m confused about whether I should try for a branch change to Mathematics if I get the required CPI.
The main reason I’m considering Math is that it’s considered a circuital branch, and I’ve heard the placement/internship opportunities are generally better than Eco. But at the same time, I’ve also heard that Math at IITK is extremely tough, while Eco is relatively chill and gives more free time.
Another thing is that I don’t really have a genuine interest in proof-heavy mathematics. I don’t hate math, but I’m not particularly passionate about abstract/theoretical stuff either.
So I wanted some honest guidance from seniors/alumni:
- Is switching from Eco to Math worth it mainly for placements/interns?
- How difficult is the Math curriculum realistically?
- Does Eco still provide decent enough opportunities if someone works hard?
- Would choosing Math without genuine interest become a bad decision later?
Would really appreciate honest opinions, especially from people in IITK.
