Installing Immich on DS224+ – double storage usage?

I’ve come across Immich a few times recently and would now like to try installing it on my NAS. I’m using a Synology DS224+.
Before I get started, I have one general question: I’ve been using Synology Photos since the beginning, and everything is currently working well. Over time, I’ve spent a lot of effort organizing and completing my entire photo library there.
If I switch to Immich now, will all my existing photos be stored twice on the NAS (= double storage usage), or is it possible to configure things so that both applications can ideally run in parallel using the same files? My goal would be to test Immich properly first before possibly deciding to stop using Synology Photos later on.
