Most Taiwan travel guides focus on the Red Line (airport→HSR). But the Orange Line is what actually connects you to Kaohsiung's interesting spots.

**Key Orange Line stations west→east:**

**O1 – Sizihwan (西子灣):** Sunset spot, NSYSU campus (free to enter), good for golden hour photography.

**O2 – Yanchengpu (鹽埔埠):** Pier-2 Art District, old harbor character, good independent cafes.

**O5 – Kaohsiung Arena (巨蛋):** The Arena, Hankyu Arena Mall, Ruifeng Night Market 7 min walk. Great residential base for stays — there are whole-apartment Airbnbs in this area that work well for groups or anyone wanting a local neighborhood feel.

**O8 – Formosa Boulevard (美麗島):** THE transfer station, and also the famous stained glass dome ceiling — worth stopping just to look up. Free.

**O10 – City Council (市議會):** Qingnian Night Market nearby.

**Crucial transfer:** Red ↔ Orange at Formosa Boulevard (O8/R10). Almost every itinerary involves this transfer.

**Fastest connection from HSR:** Zuoying (R14) → direct Orange Line → O5 Arena in **4 minutes**. No transfer. This surprises a lot of people who assume they need to go through the city center first.

The Orange Line alone covers: Cijin ferry access, Pier-2, Formosa Boulevard dome, Ruifeng Night Market, the Arena. One line, all the good stuff.

People ask a lot about where to stay in Kaohsiung. Here's a neighborhood breakdown:

**Xinxing District (新興區) — Central commercial area**

Best for: First-timers, people who want lots of hotels to choose from

MRT: Multiple stations, Red + Orange Lines

Pros: Near Liuhe Night Market, malls, many hotels

Cons: Feels generic, prices higher, not close to the interesting residential neighborhoods

**Gushan District (鼓山區) — Arena area ★ Recommended**

Best for: Concert-goers, group trips, anyone wanting a local neighborhood feel

MRT: Kaohsiung Arena Station (O5, Orange Line)

Pros: Walking distance to Kaohsiung Arena (3 min), 4 min to HSR, 7 min to Ruifeng Night Market, 5 min to Hankyu Department Store, residential and affordable

Cons: Accommodation is mostly Airbnb (not many hotels), less tourist infrastructure

Note: There are some good whole-apartment Airbnbs in this area — worth searching if you need space for a group.

**Yancheng District (鹽埔區) — Historic harbor**

Best for: Art lovers, slower travel pace

MRT: Yanchengpu Station (Orange Line)

Pros: Walking distance to Pier-2 Art Center, old city character, interesting independent restaurants

Cons: Quieter at night

**Zuoying (左營) — HSR hub**

Best for: Quick stopovers, early HSR departures

Cons: Very suburban, nothing to do on foot

For most visitors, Gushan near O5 is the sweet spot — you're 4 min from HSR, in a real neighborhood, and well-positioned for Kaohsiung Arena events. Happy to answer any questions about specific areas.

One of the most common questions I see: which Kaohsiung night market should I go to? Honest breakdown:

**Ruifeng Night Market (瑞豐夜市)**

- Location: ~7 min walk from Kaohsiung Arena MRT Station (O5)

- Hours: Thursday–Sunday 6pm–1am (CLOSED Mon–Wed — easy mistake)

- Vibe: 100% local, almost zero foreign tourists, ~300 stalls

- Price level: Very cheap. Locals eat here regularly.

- Highlights: Fried chicken cutlet, salt & pepper popcorn chicken, fresh drinks, all kinds of xiaochi

- Verdict: The real Kaohsiung night market experience

**Liuhe Night Market (六合夜市)**

- Location: Near Formosa Boulevard MRT (O8), 2 stops from the Arena

- Hours: Daily 6pm–midnight

- Vibe: Tourist-oriented, multilingual menus everywhere

- Price level: Higher, more “packaged”

- Highlights: Papaya milk, seafood, grilled items

- Verdict: Easier, more tourist-friendly, less authentic

**My take:** If you’re staying in the Gushan/Arena area (near O5), Ruifeng is literally your neighborhood night market and it’s genuinely excellent. Go there first. Do Liuhe if you want the easy tourist version or you’re already near Formosa Boulevard.

Note: Ruifeng is Thursday–Sunday only. Many people miss it by arriving on a Tuesday and heading straight to Liuhe instead — don’t make that mistake.
