I have done a fair bit of searching on the small selection of 12 gauge shotgun silencers, but I cannot find a lot of down to earth discussions on them. Now that stamps are free, I thought it would be a good time to ask some questions on shotgun silencers.

  • Are shotgun silencers as "safe" as a typical rifle can, or do they pose more safety risks?
  • Why do some silencers specifically recommend slugs, and other models/brands say never to shoot slugs through it, but prefer birdshot?
  • What's up with the specific ammo restrictions, like not being able to use "flight-control"?
  • Cleaning; is it as bad as it sounds (every 50-200 shots)? Is any type of ammo cleaner for silencers, or do the "novelty" shells just add extra crap that can break off inside?
  • Are there any expectations of less expensive models and brands coming out, now that the stamp tax is lifted?
  • If you are going to thread a fixed cylinder shotgun to use a silencer, which pattern would you recommend? Rem Choke, Mossberg/Win-choke/Browning, Mobil?
