Hey everyone,
I (23 M) love root. I've played a decent diversity of games and nothing comes close. I started playing about ~3 years ago and used to play all the time when I had 5 roommates in undergraduate. Unfortunately, everyone moved away and I stayed for grad school. I had just bought marauders expansion too and we maybe got 2 games in before my root group dispersed.
I basically only played online for the next year and a half and fell in love with the badgers. But I dont even have 1 in person game with them despite owning them.
Of course soon as I saw homeland expansion release I pre ordered.
Long story short while waiting for homeland I got really busy with grad school and havent been playing root really at all (online or in person). I tried to teach my girlfriend and new roommate, but its a lot.... At least my old roommates learned it with me and learned the expansions as they came even though they weren't as into it.
New roommate has played 2 lizard games and partner loved her harrier vagabond game but almost rage quit trying out the cats. I have played cats and otters (my 2nd fav) and just kinda let them beat me up so they can learn, and then back stab them so they can learn. Not really the most exciting games, but at least its root.
Homeland has sat on my shelf for a month but with summer approaching I might have a life again and I am ready(ish) to play homeland. I will be playing tomorrow with my partner and a new player (who likes board games like firetower and wavelength). I really want to play a homeland faction but I dont want to intimidate or overwhelm my group. And all 3 new factions seem... intimidating.
I was thinking of playing frogs and having the new player play rats (personality match and easy asf), and then have my partner play Eyrie?? She played it once 1v1 when I taught her, I know she'd prefer VG but I didnt think the reach would be there? I don't know how militant frogs are.
Would frogs be too much for a first game? I dont want to scare off anyone or overwhelm. Would bats be better? Or should I finally bring out the badgers.
I don't really want to introduce hirelings for balance so I'm trying to craft it out now
Also how is the new deck? Im a Exiles and Partisans purist but excited to try it.
Thanks!
