I am a recent graduate on a Post-completion OPT (F1 Visa). I just accepted my first job offer and will be relocating from Arizona to California. I am incredibly grateful to be starting debt-free as my parents have cleared my student loans.

The Offer:

* Base Salary: $118,000/year. (after tax)

* Relocation: $8,000 (pre-tax).

* Retirement: 2% company match (I plan to contribute $220/month for now and increase this after my first year).

* HSA: $366/month.

Current Savings:

* Cash: $1,200.

* Investments: ~$300.

I am moving from AZ to CA (roughly a 12-hour drive). I’ve decided to buy a car in California rather than Arizona to avoid the tax difference complications. I plan to rent for the first two months to save up for a car down payment. I'm targeting an apartment around $1,700/month.

Monthly Budget Estimates (Post-Tax):

* Rent & Utilities: $2,000 (Buffered).

* Car Payment (Financing 2nd hand): $700.

* Gas: $300–$400 (11-mile commute).

* Groceries: $600.

* Dining Out: $300.

* Total Estimated Monthly Spend: ~$4,000.

After my initial training period, my role shifts to 75% travel (3 weeks on-site, 1 week in office). The company stated they "take care of expenses," but I haven't received the full itemized policy yet.

My Questions for the Community:

  1. Car Financing: Given my $118k salary and the CA cost of living, does a $700/month car allocation (payment + insurance) seem reasonable for a reliable pre-owned vehicle?

  2. Relocation Costs: Beyond the $1,700 rent, what should I realistically budget for "Day 1" essentials like a bed and basic furniture?

  3. The "75% Travel" Loophole: For those who travel for work, how much does this typically lower your personal grocery/utility bills? Should I adjust my budget down for the weeks I am on-site?

  4. Tax Clarification: As an F1-OPT holder, I am mindful of the ~13% tax bracket/FICA nuances. Does my take-home math seem realistic for California?

I want to keep my non-fixed costs around $600/month if possible. Does this plan seem sustainable, or am I overlooking hidden costs of moving to CA?

Thanks in advance!
