Hello, I have hosted events in my old High School's gym for a few years now, always using the outlets along the walls. Now that we have more people using power in the gym, we were looking at how we can stretch our power budget a little further. I took a look at the gym's breaker panel and noticed they had carnival power cables. I wanted to try and use them to power the main event and leave the outlets for the participating teams.
The carnival cables are just 2 cables hanging off of a breaker panel in the AV room. While looking I saw there was a 60 amp plug on an 8/4 cable protected by a 100 amp breaker. I was trying to find which NEC code prohibits this but got lost in exceptions and such. So I was hoping someone could answer my questions.
Is this considered temporary power? Are they allowed to have the cable hanging off the breaker? (I saw a lot saying there should be a mounted receptacle, not hanging cables.) What is the NEC code that prohibits the cable, plug, and breaker situation?
I attached a picture showing the setup. Unfortunately, I didn't take a picture of everything, but you see most of it here. At the top, you can see both cables going into the breaker panel. and on the bottom, you can see the orange cable in question.
Thanks so much for any help!
