Let me preface this by saying, my wife (31), my daughter (9), my son (11), and myself (34) have lived in this downstairs apartment of an older house for 5 years. We have gone through multiple neighbors upstairs, all of them have kept to themselves and not really bothered us, which we love because we all kind of keep to ourselves.
In January of this year we were informed that we would again be getting another upstairs neighbor. For the sake of the story let’s call him Paul. What we know about Paul from the landlord, he was in the marines for like 17 years, and the landlord favors him specifically for this reason. He also has 3 kids that he doesn’t have custody of and has to have supervised visits with the which he’s only done once at his apartment since moving in in January.
Our first encounter with him he moved in at around midnight, was a little suspicious bc we didn’t initially know who it was and all we could see was a hooded person outside coming inside the upstairs apartment. He also made a bunch of noise and woke everyone up downstairs. The very next morning he was introduced to us by the landlord and the only sentence he has said to me was during that meeting where he said “I’ll try to keep it down and be mindful of the noise”. He has not done any of those things since moving in.
Aside from him not being mindful of the noise, I’m now going to list all the interactions we have had with him and I need to know if they are weird as thy seem in my mind. First, he left for a week and came back and didn’t move at all upstairs for 4 days. I know this bc the floors are paper thin (we can hear him snore at night). When it snows we like to have the kids go outside and shovel our side of the driveway for exercise and responsibility, the first time we did this he went outside and told our kids he would shovel. Which maybe he was being nice but my kids never even met him and apparently it freaked them out. Then he came downstairs and knocked on the door when only my wife was home and asked when would be a good time for him to play an instrument, this made her uncomfortable. Then my wife pulled forward the ones day to bring in groceries to try to avoid him if he came out to his car, and instead of using his front door he came out the back door while she was bringing in groceries an then ended up going to his car anyway and leaving. Then we were out of town for a weekend and when we came back we were unpacking the car and he came outside and just sat on his porch and watched us and then went back inside when we did. Finally, today the cops showed up looking for him.
The guy seems like a walking red flag to me, we are moving in a couple months. The landlord and him appear to be getting close. Apparently he went to my landlords kids baseball practice the other night. Idk just all around very strange. Any thoughts or advice?
