Hi all,
Had my first ding dong situation in our new condo. Hanging a shelf, bought a nice stud finder, indicated pipe was a stud, verified it by finding another “stud” exactly 16 inches away on center.
Ended up being a fire sprinkler line which runs separately from our main water line. Had to call fire department to shut down fire riser as it was chained (learned today I could’ve broke the lock with a hammer and shut it off). As far as I know nothing else was shut off minus the water main before I realized it was a separate sprinkler line. After fire department turned water off, we were still able to use water in house.
Well today had a fire protection company do the repair, they removed a sprinkler head to drain the line, and then repaired the pipe. They turned the sprinkler system back on, I verified and saw system pressure outside the building was at 60psi.
After the repair, I noticed that when I turned multiple faucets on that the pressure died down.
I checked all valves that I know of, all on.
Checked water heater, presumably full of water as it pours out when I open the drain. (New water heater installed in January 2026)
I tried bleeding the lines as they seem to sputter, admittedly I only did it for about 6 minutes or so.
I checked for leaks by watching the water meter while all fixtures were off, no movement, then I turned the spigot that’s connected to the main water shut off, ran to the water meter, and rapid movement.
After checking around, I checked the water lines before the water softener and after.
At first, I noticed the spigot that is immediately after the main water shut off had full pressure. BUT THEN, I decided to let it run, and after 15 seconds or so, it lost a lot of pressure. So I figure the problem is either before the main water shut off.
Im going to call the fire protection company in the morning to see, not sure what I’d get out of that but just in case.
Is there any advice? Would the water riser being shut off and back on have an effect even if it’s seperate from water main? The water main was never really shut off.
