Ebike Speed Sensor Trouble
I'm having some difficulty with an ebike I purchased. It has a kd58c bike computer, and while the push assist will work I haven't been able to get actual pedal assist to do anything no matter what assist level I set it to. I believe the cause of this issue is the speed sensor, no matter how close I get the magnet to the sensor near the rear wheel. I ordered a replacement speed sensor (5v) and tried swapping that in. Unfortunately, that didn't fix my problems.
I've identified the ground, 5v and data wires for the speed sensor and tested with some neodymium magnets. The new speed sensor returns ~3.3v idle and ~1.6v when it detects the magnet. The bike computer doesn't get any speed reading from this. When I tap the ground and data wires together, I get a speed reading based on my tapping.
AI thinks the issue is that the voltage readings I'm getting are not dropping low enough to get a pulse, and it thinks that I should replace this sensor potentially with a 2 wire normally open reed sensor.
Myself, I don't really care about getting a real speed reading. I just want the power assist to work, so it needs to get fed something in order to run (I think). My goal is to ride this bike to a nearby park where I can do my running. It's a very hilly and not particularly short bike ride there, so I was hoping this ebike can make the ride a little easier! This reed switch solution seems like it would work for me.
I'm not extremely good with electronics, but I can solder, crimp connectors like JST connectors, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions for a replacement speed sensor for this situation? Because this is the second hall sensor I've had not work on the bike I'm leaning reed switch, but poking around on Ali Express/Amazon I'm not finding a ton of options that I feel confident will work. Or alternatively, is there a way to adjust the voltage that the KD58C is looking for when it reads a pulse?
