I’m currently slotted to be a SA at a lit boutique in NYC (think Hecker Fink/Selendy), but am wondering how these firms are perceived by employers outside of NYC. I really want to establish my life and career in NYC, but also want to keep my doors into federal government open down the line (assuming an administration takes office that aligns w my values).

Will the early substantive experience I get at a boutique overcome the lack of brand recognition and alumni network that I may otherwise get at a bigger firm? Is that even something I should be worried about?

Furthermore, does firm prestige or partnership connections to the bench play a role in securing clerkships? Bc of my family ties to NYC, I’m really hoping to clerk at SDNY/EDNY and 2nd Cir. (to the extent that I would forego clerking anywhere else if not offered a position).

Also if anyone has thoughts on those two firms, I would love to hear them bc I’m always interested in gathering data points. I’ve read some not so nice things in some places but that has not been the vibe I’ve gotten from in-person experiences/word of mouth.

Thank you!
