Can anyone identify a fantasy novel about a boy who finds a magic glove of power embedded in a tree. It was placed there decades or centuries ago by a wizard who was also a tortoise, I think.

At one point in the story (or series), he encounters another powerful youth who possesses the other glove-of-power. Of course, they fight.

The story I'm thinking of also might have used caves as a means of travelling into different realms. Thank you!
