Separation anxiety mediation question

My dog has separation anxiety and usually will pant for a while when I leave and then settles and sits/sleeps on the couch until I get home.

Today I gave him 1mg dose of lorazepam (vet recommended and prescribed) and he is whining, and howling so loud, pacing. I’ve never heard him howl in my life until now. *Could lorazepam have the opposite effect?!*

It’s been about 8 hours now and he seems to be more calm but still whining and howling at times and back and forth to the front door.

I also have a vet appointment next week to start him on some medication for anxiety
