I worked at a former employer for two years with a completely clean expense history. I’m the type of person who would never pad expenses and am very by the book wuth these matters. I often even neglect to submit small receipts for minor things. Near the end of my time there, I had two separate sales promotional expenses, roughly $400 each. The promotion expenses were for some gimmicky sales strategy that was highly ineffective but I executed it anyway. I took photos of the receipts and uploaded them through the expense platform. I’m worried that I may have accidentally uploaded the same receipt photo twice for the two different purchases. The expense report was also approved much quicker than normal, and two days later I was suddenly let go a two days with a very vague “performance” reason. No one ever mentioned expenses or receipts to me. Could an honest duplicate receipt mistake like this be enough for a company to fire someone without ever addressing it directly? I would like to think they would have approached me about this and given me the chance to explain and produce all receipts. Has anyone seen this happen?
