I just bought a second hand bike yesterday and today, the pedal with the entire crank arm fell off. I am not an expert on bikes but I paid $750 bucks for it. I did as much research as I could on the bike frame, it's a well made pretty light and sturdy frame and the bike feels amazing to ride. The bike frame is a felt x-city.

I tried many bikes at this shop and this was the one that felt amazing to ride. The other bikes felt cheaply made and 'mechanical' even if they were all branded bicycles your Treks, Fuji, whatever they were. I wanted a flatbar road bike or a flatbar hybrid that is good for commuting and can go fast and solid for 20-30 mile rides.

I had no idea the entire crank would become dislodged within 24 hours of a purchase. I had a surgery a year ago on my knee, thank God i did not injure myself, i was fuming just now and i couldn't believe it. I have been cycling on rental bikes for almost 15 months since my surgery with no problems, and now when i decide to invest in a 'proper' bike it just goes bust on me within 24 hours of purchase.

Anyway, I still love this bike but I cannot trust it that it may have other underlying issues, and i don't trust the bike shop either because I feel the other crank arm is also probably loose and they have no idea about it.

The bike shop owner is arranging to have the bike picked up from my house tomorrow. Should I settle for a refund, or give the bike another shot if the owner repairs the pedal crank on both sides. but then i am worried that there are underlying problems.

I am just devastated right now but i should also be thankful i didn't screw up my left knee that i have taken so long to rehab.

What would you do if you were in my shoes? Let's say the owner replaces the pedal crank, should I give the bike another chance or take the refund and go find another bike? I do not personally think the bike shop guys are dishonest people and maybe this was a freak accident.

Please advise me on how I can inspect this bike further, assume both pedal crank arms are replaced, should I inspect the body/frame of the bicycle? What's the best way to do that. The bike is also single speed so I came away from all this thinking it would be easier to maintain. Anyway, I will be more careful with bikes next time but i never have experienced an entire pedal crank arm being dislodged ever, how can i be more careful with inspecting such things n the future?
