[Vote] vote on my graduation gift watch

Hey everyone, I’m choosing a watch for my graduation gift from my family. Budget is around $550 max, and I’d ideally like to use most of it, but I won’t buy just to spend the money.

I tried the Mido Ocean Star 39 and loved the proportions, especially in blue/black, but it’s around $1,000, so not realistic right now.
Made a post recently but now I tried on some models.

What I’m looking for:

- Around 39mm
- 47mm lug-to-lug max
- Around 12mm thick max
- Steel bracelet preferred
- Sapphire preferred
- Dark blue first, black second, panda chrono third
- No old/vintage or second-hand watches
- No “just save more” suggestions

For reference, I own a San Martin SN0116G, and it has given me a lot for around $300. That makes some more expensive options harder to justify on specs alone, even though I know specs/value are not the only thing that matters for this kind of gift.

### Current ranking:

  1. Yema Navygraf MN Quartz
Currently winning for me. I love the design and dark blue tone. Concern: K1 mineral, quartz value, stiff bracelet comments.

  2. Galo Super 200 Dark Edition
Love the look, dial, and thin case. Concern: maybe too similar to my San Martin.

  3. Glycine Combat Sub 39
Best on paper: Swiss auto, sapphire, thin, 39mm. Concern: a bit Sub-homage/generic, and I don’t really like the sunburst dial because it looks cheap to me on this watch.

  4. Seiko SSB479 Chronograph
Panda chrono exception. Great compact fit, but it’s over my ideal thickness and the domed Hardlex worries me.

  5. San Martin SN0151-GL
Great specs and proportions: 39mm, thin, sapphire, Miyota 90S5. Concern: I already own a San Martin.

Which one would you vote for and why? Write-in suggestions are welcome, but please keep them close to these proportions.

Hey everyone, I’m looking for recommendations for a watch that fits a very specific spot in my collection.
I want a 39–40mm diver or diver-style watch that wears thin and compact. My current reference point is my San Martin SN0116G, which I’ll include a picture of. I like how it wears, so something around that size would be ideal. I’m okay with 40mm if the lug-to-lug is reasonable, but I don’t want something bulky.
What I’m looking for:
39–40mm case
Steel bracelet
Black or blue dial
Ideally automatic, but I’m open to quartz if the watch makes sense
Preferably sapphire crystal
Around 12mm thick or less, measured caseback to the top of the crystal
Budget was around $450, but I could maybe stretch closer to $550 for the right watch
I want it to feel like a special watch, since it would be a graduation gift
What I’m not looking for:
I don’t really want a thick, expensive Seiko with Hardlex. I know Seiko has some good divers, but a lot of the options I’ve seen are either too thick, too large, or feel overpriced for the specs.
My top options right now are:
1. Glycine Combat Sub 39
This is probably winning right now. I like that it’s Swiss, automatic, thin enough, 39mm, on bracelet, and has 300m water resistance. It feels like the safest “real watch” option.
2. Phoibos Delphinus Aventurine
This might be one of my favorite options because of the aventurine dial, but it seems to be out of stock everywhere. 11.9mm thickness is ok
3. Yema Navygraf Marine Nationale Quartz
I really like the design and the brand identity, but I’m not fully convinced. It uses a Seiko VK31-style quartz movement, which I’ve seen in much cheaper homages, and it has K1 mineral crystal instead of sapphire. I’ve also read that the bracelet can be stiff where it meets the case, which worries me.
My “ideal” watch would probably be something like the Mido Ocean Star 39: compact, proper brand, thin enough, bracelet, sapphire, and good proportions. But it’s above what I’m trying to spend.
I’ve also noticed prices have gone up a lot in general. Even something like a Hamilton Murph is now around $800, so I’m trying to find something that still feels special without going too far into that price range.
Are there any other watches I should be looking at? Especially thin 39–40mm divers, microbrands, Swiss quartz, or lesser-known options with good bracelets.
Thanks!
