Hi everyone,
I was scammed last Sunday (May 3rd) around 3:34 PM while selling a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra on DoneDeal. I want to share the exact tactic used to help others avoid the same trap.
The Scam:
The meet-up took place at Milltown (D06). Two young men in tracksuits and white sneakers arrived. They didn't even check the phone and immediately showed me a screen on their phone claiming the Bank of Ireland transfer was "Successful."
The Fake App (See attached photo):
The app they used looks very convincing (I've attached a photo of their screen). It shows:
• "Transfer Successful" with a green tick.
• The correct amount (€360) and my IBAN.
• The Trap: A section stating "Processing Time: 24 hours," which they used as an excuse for why the money wasn't showing in my Revolut account immediately, citing the Bank Holiday weekend.
The Suspects:
• Two young males in tracksuits.
• Phone number used: 083 853 XX53.
• The name they used was "Sean."
Garda Progress:
I have filed a formal statement at Rathmines Garda Station. The Gardaí informed me they are already investigating similar reports involving these same individuals. The phone's IMEI (354217638582199) and Serial No. (RSCW604NY1L) have been blacklisted.
My Advice:
If you are selling anything high-value, DO NOT trust any "Transfer Successful" screen on the buyer's phone. If the money is not in your account, do not hand over the item. These fake apps are designed to look exactly like BOI, AIB, or Revolut interfaces.
If anyone has had a similar encounter or has CCTV in this area, please PM me. Let's help the Gardaí build a stronger case against this duo.
