Hello, I am a single, disabled (under 55, no long term care) SSDI recipient located in California.

I received a small car accident settlement back in January: $3,223 and change, net. I reported this lump sum as soon as I got it (Jan). I heard nothing back. Mind you, I get $1,615 every month from SSDI. I also have a little backpay from SSDI: $2,043. I calculated and I am still under the asset limit of $130,000.

I submitted my renewal this March (due in May). I received a letter yesterday, asking me to fill out a

"County Medical Services Program: Potential 3rd Party Liability Notification" (form 1176) which I assume, has to do with the settlement I reported. I called the county office and they were of little help: they just told me to fill out the form to the best of my knowledge and submit it ASAP.

My concerns are as follows:

  1. I reported the amount back in Jan but it was not accounted for until May. Technically, I was over the monthly limit for that month. Will I need to pay back what Medical has spent on me from Jan until now?

  2. Does this mean I will lose coverage?

  3. Will I need to pay part of my settlement to Medical? I called my lawyer and he said that the at fault party's insurance paid for my medical expenses, Not Medical. They said they wrote a letter to Medical explaining that they Would Not be billed. The attorney told me to make a note on the form stating that Medical will need to contact them directly to have the letter re-sent.

Another thing, and this, I didnt know until I did research yesterday: I was supposed to report the lawsuit within 30 days of initiation. It started in Nov. 2024 and I only reported the settlement amount once received.

  1. Will That count against me?

Please advise. Sorry for the lengthy post, just wanted to include as much details as possible.
