Coming to terms with hearing loss

I have had a hard time hearing for about 20 years. But at 48 and I just tired for trying to hear or just be around people. So I went and was tested twice, first time I was in disbelief. I have profound hearing loss in both ears. I do read lips or stay silent for the most part. People mumble all the time. Ugh. Now, I am getting hearing aids and I am worried but all the sounds out there. There are times I like the silence. Also, my doctor said that I am deaf, but I can hear loud or very high pitched sounds so maybe not deaf?
