I was trying to fix an issue with an antique rocking chair. I got the rocker off, fixed the problem, then when I went to put the rocker back on, it seems impossible. The pegs for the rocker perfectly line up with the holes on the chair, but because they point away from each other, the pegs are too far apart when the rocker isn't fully on. In the picture, you can see it's almost half of the peg that over shoots the rocker's hole when the other peg is in.

I just can't figure out the math on how they were ever able to put it on. I've tried tapping the side with a rubber mallet to try to compress the peg, I've tried stretching the rocker towards flat, but the wood is just too strong to flex meaningfully.

How do I get the rocker back on?
