Disappointed by Patagonia’s lifetime (or just 5-year) bag warranty

I’m writing this because I’m incredibly disappointed with how Patagonia is currently handling their "Ironclad Guarantee."

I’ve been a loyal customer for around seven years, starting back when I was a student. Over time, I’ve spent well over €5,000 on their gear.Everything from wetsuits and jackets to bags and flannels. I was always happy to pay the "Patagonia tax" because I believed in the mission: buy less, repair more, and trust that the company stands behind their products for a lifetime.

A few months ago, my late 2019 backpack (purchased in 2020 for its durability) started delaminating. The TPU coating is peeling off rapidly, making the bag unusable by now since it’s no longer drizzle-proof and looks terrible. I reached out to customer service, expecting a repair or a fair solution.

Initially, I was offered a 25% discount on a new Black Hole backpack, and after a second email, 40% off. I was told that for bags, anything older than five years is considered "normal wear and tear" or "end of life." They literally told me: "It is not unusual to have to replace gear after about five years of intensive use."

Meanwhile, my Fjällräven pack is nearly 20 years old and still going strong. I got it in elementary school and used it all the way through middle school, high school, and university. It was not handled with care at all. My Pinqponq bag is the same age as the Patagonia one, has been used at least just as much, and shows zero signs of delamination.

Since when did Patagonia, the company that tells us "Don't buy this jacket", start treating a 6-year-old product as a disposable item? If the "Ironclad Guarantee" is actually just a "5-year limited warranty" for bags, they should be transparent about it.

I feel like I’m being "processed" with a 40% discount code to buy more stuff, which completely defeats the purpose of sustainability. If a premium technical pack only lasts 5 years of normal use, the price tag and the sustainability claims just don't add up anymore.

Has anyone else noticed a shift in their warranty policy lately, or am I just unlucky? Is this just their customer service in Europe or is it the same all over the world?
