Gentoo Gazebo-Burgh: Sunny Yesterday, Rainy Today

The first half of this video was taken yesterday, when the chick under the yellow gazebo was bathed in a nice ray of sun while getting fed. There is a parent guard shift. The second half of this video was taken today, which was much rainier, and you can see the chicks under the blue gazebo getting fed. A penguin also has a little trip over another’s tail to the right of the yellow gazebo.

Ngamotu Marine Society: Little Blue Penguin Nest

This is a from nest stream that I found recently. The burrow design is a little different from what I have seen from the Oamaru, NIWA, Napier, and Phillips Island cams. There seems to be much more of an incline inside, which can lead to the penguins using it like a slide, as you can see in this video (around 45 seconds). I will post the link below!

Edinburgh Rockhoppers: Kids Hanging Out

Hello penguin gang! As we can see in the video, the chicks are together on the 5th nest back, and the parents don’t seem to mind! I saw the other smaller chick yesterday on one of the nests farthest back. I also saw that the nest 2nd back, the one that has a penguin laying down in this video, the parents were gone from it a couple times yesterday. It looked like there was an egg there at some point, but I don’t think there will be a chick from the 2nd (or 3rd) nest.

Finally, it looks like rain is on the forecast today in the E’burgh! Stay warm everybody!

Gentoo Gazebo-Burgh: New Day, New Angle, New Nests!

Hello penguin gang! Today in the Edinburgh Zoo gentoo penguin colony, it looks like the camera has been adjusted. The blue gazebo on the left is the new star of the show: there are TWO chicks! I believe we have been told that the dad of this nest is named Kevin, but I’m not sure the mother’s name. I caught movement of a chick under the yellow gazebo on the left as well. I’m not sure what we have under the right nests, but I saw an egg in the nest in the middle in between the two yellow gazebos as well!

Phillips Island Burrow: A Not So Welcome Visitor! Part 1 (warning, penguin scuffle)

The penguin couple was enjoying their time together in nest when suddenly, a third penguin pops in! I have seen the one-legged little blue with a second mate in the past… perhaps the return of a jilted lover? To me, it seems like Stumpy is trying to play referee!

Edinburgh Rockhopper Chicks: when your kid starts getting sassy!

Hello penguin gang! This noticed one of the parents of nest #5 was chilling on the edge of the nest, and its chick starting nipping at its toes! I have not seen this behavior so I found it very interesting

Rewinding Oamaru Nest:

This is from earlier this year, the last batch of the 3 clutches that the penguins couple of this nest raised! The first chick of the third brood hatched on January 22nd. The chicks are 2 and a half weeks old in this video. At this age, the chicks are moving around the nest on their own and being left on their own (post guard stage) but not exploring outside quite yet.

I believe this is the mother in the video. We determined that the father had a white patch near his tail, which coincidentally disappeared after his molt this year.

Gentoo Gazebo-burgh short update, Day 10

Hello penguin gang! The babby is still small, and I have not noticed any other chicks that are visible on the gentoo penguin camera. I did see a zookeeper take the baby and return it. And I saw a post from the zoo that there is a parent/nest with two chicks!!

Rockhopper Chicks in Edinburgh: On the Move

Hello penguin gang!

It can be tough to get a good line of sight with the rockhopper chicks, since the nests are all in a row. But I did get a good video today of the chick leaving the 5th nest back and going back to the 4th nest to ask its parents for food!

Remember back in the day, when you’d go over to a friend’s house, have lunch there, then come back to your house, and have a second lunch?
