Some developments may be coming at Brock regarding cleaning services. Around 20 full-time positions are about to disappear, as management does not want to post the vacancies, using the university’s financial issues as an excuse—even though they received $25 million from the government, and according to the Sunshine List for the 2024–2025 period, salary increases amounted to more than $9 million.
It is very disheartening to feel that corruption is running unchecked and that management’s greed has no limits—they are going after everything.
Yesterday, we were introduced to new work routines where they claimed the workload would be reduced, using the excuse of lowering the cleaning frequency in certain areas (as they communicated to the Brock community via email). However, what they are not saying is that they have redistributed the vacant areas, which ultimately only creates more work for the approximately 76 cleaning staff at the university.
If at this moment—when the university is relatively empty—the work routines cannot be fulfilled, I don’t even want to imagine how things will be when students return. And that’s assuming we even have all the necessary supplies to do our job, because I should remind you that last year there were at least four occasions when we had no paper towels or toilet paper. It was truly a miracle to keep things running on those days without it being obvious how poorly the operation was being managed.
This goes beyond CUPE—this truly affects the entire community in the long term, creating stress and a disastrous environment for both work and study. We’ll see what happens, but the future does not look promising.
