I keep seeing this illustration about a cut through of a Roman road construction - both on Reddit, Facebook, etc. How realistic is it really?

It seems.. quite extreme? Did the Romans really dig that deep? I can't even imagine making a massive road system like this (although probably not all the roads were paved).
