Tip for first-time backpackers: know the common scams before you land

Going on my third trip through SE Asia next month and one thing I wish I knew on my first trip is how predictable tourist scams are. Same scams, different city.

Few things that helped me:

  • Always check the taxi meter before getting in
  • If something feels too cheap or too friendly, it probably is
  • Have emergency numbers saved OFFLINE, don't rely on wifi
  • Know what things actually cost before negotiating

I actually made a free app that does most of this - checks if a situation is a scam, scans bills for overcharges, has emergency numbers for every country. Works offline too which is clutch when you don't have data.

Anyone else have tips for avoiding scams on the road?
