Questions about handrail
What would be the best way to go about mounting a handrail and balusters on the open side of this basement stairwell? I recently purchased the house and have a small child plus 2 dogs who I don't want jumping off.
The stringer/cap goes all the way to the ceiling at the top so I assume the best option is mounting the top of the rail to the ceiling/wall framing. There is one single stair that continues above the ceiling to the door. But, what about installing the bottom newel? There is a carpeted platform at the bottom that goes out flush with the half wall, but I assume it is just a single joist along the edge. Best to route the platform out and install blocking or go down to concrete? Or is there an easier solution?
I am not a carpenter, but am pretty handy with home improvement/repair as far as a non-tradesman homeowner.
