Hi everyone,

I’m planning to buy a camera as a gift for my wife and would appreciate some buying advice. She enjoys photography and already takes great photos with her phone, but I’d like to get her something that’s a clear step up from a smartphone camera.

To help others help me, here’s a template:

(1) Budget, country, and currency:
$700–$800 USD for camera body + kit lens. Located in the USA.
I could also spend an additional $300–$400 later on an extra lens if needed. I can wiggle a bit for a better combo as well.

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs?
She currently uses her phone camera (S23/S24U). While the results are great, we’d like better image quality, and overall room to grow.

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot?
Primarily landscapes, animals, and nature. Some casual video use as well.

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both?
Mostly photography, with occasional video.

From my search+, mirrorless cameras seem like a good option. I’ve been looking at the Canon R50 and Sony ZV‑E10, but I’m leaning toward Canon since I can get an employee discount through Canon’s website.

These are the Canon options I’m currently considering:

  • EOS R50 V + RF‑S 14–30mm f/4–6.3 IS STM PZ kit
    • ~$744 new
    • ~$530 body only
    • ~$633 refurbished body + kit
  • EOS R50 + RF‑S 18–45mm f/4.5–6.3 IS STM kit
    • ~$744 new
    • ~$633 body only

I’m unsure which kit lens would be better for her use case, or if there’s a better alternative altogether in this price range. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
