My gut says it was a made-for-TV movie, but, like the dinosaurs, I'm not totally sure on that.

The only thing I remember for certain is that it's a movie about a group of friends ending up in the world of the TV and that the scientist demonstrates it using an orange.

it's probably from the 80's or 90's, given when I grew up and the general quality of the special effects.
