Context: 1980 American home. This is main light switch in the main bedroom. There is no light fixture. The switch does not power/switch any outlets in the room. So I tested with multi meter. Both line and load to ground are 120v whether switch is on or off. Also took switch off and measured straight from both leads to ground.

So why are both constantly hot? Did they use to control outlets and someone wired it permanently hot?

No idea what is going on with this switch. Let me know if you guys need more information.

SOLVED: thanks u/ithinarine and others. Tab was not broken leaving both ends hot.
