We live in a country where even extreme criminals like rapists and murderers are not given death penalty. But now, a 17 year old and another father, whose crime is 'illegally occupying public land' die due to the suffocating mental conditions created by the government, and we are dismissing it like it's just another thing.
How are we supposedly intelligent enough to understand that they are illegal settlements that needs to be removed, but completely blind to the horrors of slapping such a short eviction notice on an actual, vulnerable Sukumbasi family? What would have been lost if instead of destroying everything in 48 hours, the government had mobilized corresponding authorities to identify people in need with a deadline of 1 week? What would have happened if the government had communicated properly, making sure those in need get help? What would have happened if the demolition had started after that? Maybe, just maybe, we wouldn't have lost two souls this week.
Many people in these riverbank settlements are living in miserable conditions, not by choice but due to not having any other choice. They have been misled, used as pawns, and abused by political parties for decades, and those people stayed there in the hope that they would eventually get the land. Hope is a dangerous thing, isn't it? (SR) And guess who gets all the punishment? The same gullible people, whether it’s from the government running bulldozers or nature bringing floods. RSP's own election manifesto (number 82) stated they would establish a high-level commission with full rights to distinguish real Sukumbasi from illegal settlers. The demolition was the easiest, and it has been done, but what about priority? What should have been done first? Whose mistake led to these deaths?
Nothing made me feel as sick and bad as seeing the comments from our own people. People are literally saying they got what they had to get due to their actions, saying they took their life due to their own depression and personal problems. The attached screenshot is from people commenting on 17 years old death. How are we so insensitive? Even this subreddit has posts dismissing Sukumbasi deaths, saying the government can't take responsibility for personal decisions. How did we become so heartless? How did we come here? How is it possible for us to quickly jump from blasting Buddha was born in Nepal in every online post to being satisfied/okay seeing kids on ruins, families cry in despair, someone tragically die in riverbank? How?
