I’m looking for advice on whether this situation seems fair and what my next step should be.

I have a 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited that has had ongoing engine-related issues for quite some time, including repeated check engine lights, camshaft/phaser repairs, oil control issues, and engine ticking noise. The vehicle has been in the shop multiple times (over 13 visits total 10 at one dealership and 3 at this recent dealership ), and several repairs have already been attempted—many of them while the vehicle was still under warranty.

Despite those repairs, the issue has never been fully resolved.

Now the dealership is telling me they need to perform an engine teardown to determine the cause. They are asking me to approve a $500 teardown charge.
I’ve also spoken with Jeep Customer Care, and they indicated that if the repair is approved under goodwill, it would be covered at 80/20. Based on an estimated $11,000 engine replacement, that would leave me responsible for about $2,300.

I have spoken to Jeep Customer Care Goodwill and they keep telling me they have approved 80/20 split but the dealership needs to decide that price. YET the dealership keeps pushing for me to approve this $500 teardown….. why if it’s been approved by Goodwill?

Here’s where I’m confused and concerned:

  1. If this has been an ongoing issue with repeated failed repairs (including while under warranty), is it reasonable for me to be responsible for a $500 teardown at all?

2)Why is a teardown still required if there is already a clear history of repeat failure in the same engine system?

3)Is it normal to still require teardown approval even when goodwill has already been discussed at an 80/20 level?

4)Does this sound like something that should be fully covered given the history?

I’m trying to understand if this is standard process or if I should be pushing back harder before agreeing to anything.

Any insight from others who have dealt with similar situations (especially with Jeep/Stellantis) would be really appreciated.

I’m sorry for such long post and possibly repeating myself…. I’m actually losing my mind over it ALL!!!
