Whether it’s a lawyer or another type of consultant, how can you tell if they’re actually good?

I’ve had “cheap” consultants give solid advice and follow up properly, while a lawyer charged me $3,000 for a simple PR application and still managed to get my birthdate wrong.

Now I need professional help for a sensitive situation, and I don’t know how to choose.

When I ask around, people recommend someone they know, but when I look into it, it’s clear they don’t really have a way to judge that person’s competence. It’s similar with financial advisors or renovation contractors: most people don’t have a real point of comparison and just because they didn’t run into issues they assume this was the best choice.

Getting back to my question: how to reliably pick a consultant?

I am asking for a spouse sponsorship.

Thanks for reading.
