This subject comes up so often in the discussion about women's health where people will complain how we don't know anything about women's bodies, how primitive the treatment of women's illnesses is and so on.
While I personally feel that many countries, including my own, lag behind in providing safe, accessible maternity care, I never thought it's anything to do with the specialty but instead a symptom of a larger public health infrastructure problem.
If anything, obs-gyn rightfully get a large share of resources and importance (especially in my public hospital that caters to economically disadvantaged people in a low-middle income country, where a lot of babies are born).
Why is it that so much dissatisfaction is expressed regarding this specific field when massive improvements have been made, comparable to any other field of medicine.
We've slashed maternal mortality tremendously, women rarely die of post partum hemorrhage if they're in a proper hospital, and we have real choice with respect to when we get pregnant (there are so many contraceptive options to choose from).
I don't understand the negativity.
