Matric 2026. Is it possible to upgrade from math lit to pure math and get accepted into a public university ?

Hey, I’m currently in Grade 12 in South Africa. In Grade 11 I switched from pure maths to maths literacy, and my marks were kind of average overall. I really need advice before I make a decision.

At first I wanted to go into accounting, but after doing more research I realised the path I was looking at wouldn’t actually get me to CA ( the extended accounting course) , so I dropped that idea. Now I’m more interested in going into tech (like software engineering or something similar).

The problem is most tech degrees require pure maths, and I’m doing maths lit.

So now I’m stuck between two options Do I?: Apply this year with my current marks (maybe for something like IT/Information Systems or a private college) Or take a gap year in 2027 and upgrade, switch back to pure maths, and improve my marks so I can apply for better tech degrees

I just don’t know what the smarter move is long term and it’s stressful since applications have opened now.

Also, how does upgrading actually work in South Africa? Do universities accept upgraded marks the same way? Is it realistic to switch from maths lit back to pure maths and do well?

I’d really appreciate advice, especially from people who went through something similar.
